The frequent flash floods carry waste of all kinds down to the seaside slums of Port-au-Prince, including garbage, sewage, dead animals and even people. That waste facilitates disease in neighborhoods like Cite Soleil where perhaps as many as 500,000 live like sardines in their leaky shacks, and potable water is scarce.
