The stubby carcasses of cut trees litter the barren landscape of Northwest Haiti. Studies differ, but most agree that less than 10 percent of Haiti's tree cover remains. Charcoal production in Haiti has become one of the only viable cash crops, and has led to the wholesale destruction of the countryıs forests. This widespread deforestation has, in turn, led to massive erosion, unfertile farmlands, famine, and regular flash floods, which facilitate disease as they sweep garbage, animals and people into the slums.
