Isolated by geography and language, Rosita Joseph, 25, and her children struggle to survive in their stick and mud home in the Dominican Republic. Joseph, who came from Haiti several years ago and speaks only broken Spanish, says life is better here than in Haiti, which ironically is the next hill behind the house. However, to all appearances, there is little difference between the rural poverty seen along both sides of the border in this region of central Hispaniola.
