For a group wanting to "rough it," cold showers, bats and a ride in the bed of a truck on a rough country road in El Salvador seemed to help these pilgrims feel closer to the poor they were visiting. But even then, they were well aware that their accomodations and transportation were still far better than those of the women they saw on foot, balancing heavy loads on their heads.
