The shock of Third World destitution is sometimes punctuated by moments of joy, experienced here by Ellen Messinger, who was overcome when she saw the shower and toilet building that her North Carolina church raised the money to build in a Kingston, Jamaica, slum. Before this sanitation was provided, men, women and children alike bathed in the open under a standpipe. Messinger said later: "The first time you come back feeling it's an insurmountable problem, then you go back the second time and see the opportunity for change. You see the love of other people can bring about change. I felt complete, overwhelming joy and relief. It was that 'God love' I was feeling."
